Course Materials

The slides and templates for each week are listed below.

We also include the ‘teaching manuals’ which are a detailed commentary on what happened in each class. They are designed to help you take these materials and train others. You might also find that they clarify points that you may have missed in the lecture.

There will be opportunities post-course for you to review your data governance plan further, and receive feedback from the tutors.

This guidance document contains guidance on

    • data ethics and security

    • managing public conversations – how to ensure confidential information is not accidentally shared

    • presenting safe results from group events without revealing confidential information

    • introductory statements that might usefully set the tone for a public meeting

    • A template Privacy Information Notice and two alternative consent forms

The document was developed jointly with the Iswe Foundation, a non-profit organisation devoted to organising Citizens’ Assemblies and other community engagement activities worldwide. The templates were designed to help facilitators of the assemblies with their data and event handling, hence these refer to ‘assemblies’ rather than focus groups or meetings, but we think these should be generally useful!

We have tried to keep the language simple to work with as wide a range of audiences as possible. We have not branded them so you can edit as you need – but if you would like to acknowledge UWE/Iswe that would be very friendly! These are new developments, so if you do use them please feel free to contact the UWE or Iswe teams and give us feedback!
